RIVER TURNS BLOOD-RED IN CHINA

River’s plague-like transformation was
noticed earlier on Thursday 24/8/2014 by residents in Zhejiang province who reported that they had noticed a weird odour coming from the area where the river was located, ABC News reports.

Locals also said the river appeared to be fine around 5am local time, but in less than an hour later, people noticed the sudden change of colour - blood-red metamorphosis.
Upon inspection, investigators with the
Wenzhou Environmental Protection Bureau
were unable to find any specific causes for
the bloody incident.
“We suspect that somebody dumped
artificial colouring in the water because he
thought the typhoon yesterday would cause
heavy rain, and nobody would notice [the
colour]”, bureau chief Jianfeng Xiao told
China News.

“It turned out there wasn’t heavy rainfall
yesterday, so the evidence is left behind.”
Xiao added that the businesses along the
river include a food colouring company, a
clothing shop and a paper manufacturer,
according to ABC News.
Despite the inexplicable strangeness of the
blood-red waterway, locals had said they have been reaping benefits.
The really weird thing is that we have
been able to catch fishes because the water is normally so clear” , said a villager on
Weibo.

NEWS: YES, EBOLA CAN BE TRANSMITTED THROUGH SEX AND SALIVA




The Ebola Virus, known as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), and formerly referred to as Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever is speedily gaining grounds across West Africa. So far, it has reportedly killed 632 people and has had it’s first death case here in Nigeria.



Ebola can be transmitted from human to human. In the Journal of Infectious Diseases, health experts dedicated to research on the virus, made these assertions after several tests:

“Although Ebola virus (EBOV) is transmitted by unprotected physical contact with infected persons, few data exist on which specific bodily fluids are infected or on the risk of fomite transmission. Therefore, we tested various clinical specimens from 26 laboratory-confirmed cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, as well as environmental specimens collected from an isolation ward, for the presence of EBOV. Virus was detected by culture and/or reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction in 16 of 54 clinical specimens (including saliva, stool, semen, breast milk, tears, nasal blood, and a skin swab) and in 2 of 33 environmental specimens.We conclude that EBOV is shed in a wide variety of bodily fluids during the acute period of illness but that the risk of transmission from fomites in an isolation ward and from convalescent patients is low when currently recommended infection control guidelines for the viral hemorrhagic fevers are followed.”
What this clearly means is that the virus can be gotten through unprotected sex and kissing infected people. In addition, if one comes in contact with bodily secretions found on needles, scalpels, soiled clothes and linens, there is high risk of infection.

Other ways one can contact the disease are through contact with a contaminated objects, butchering an infected animal and touching the dead body of someone who has died from the disease.

Fruit bats are also natural hosts of the virus, according to the World Health Organization. For people who enjoy eating bats, they have been warned to desist. Also, researchers believe humans are infected by handling dead or alive infected animals (like chimpanzees, gorillas and forest antelopes). People are advised to avoid bush meat.

Ebola Kills
Out of the 410 suspected and confirmed cases of Ebola in Guinea, 310 suspected deaths have occurred. Of the 196 suspected and confirmed cases in Liberia, 116 suspected deaths have occurred. Of 442 suspected and confirmed cases in Sierra Leone, 206 suspected deaths have occurred. Ebola kills 80 to 90 percent of the time, says Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Diagnosis is Hard in the Early Stages
Because the first symptoms of Ebola could be signs of other conditions like skin rash and red eyes, it is usually hard to diagnose. However, tests can be run in a hospital.

Symptoms sometimes appear from 2 to 21 days after a person gets infected but the most common is 8-10 days.

Ebola Has no Cure or Vaccine
Treatments and vaccines are being tested right now but so far, nothing has been made available for the cure or prevention of Ebola. There is only supportive therapy for infected persons and this consists of maintaining blood pressure and oxygen levels, and maintaining adequate fluid and electrolyte balance.

Some People Do Recover From Ebola
The percentage of recoveries is very low, most times just 1 out of 10 reported cases makes it out alive. It is yet uncertain why some people are able to fight it and others cannot.

How to Prevent Infection of Ebola

The Guardian listed out the following measures:
Avoid direct and indirect contact with bodily fluids and tissue of infected persons.
Frequent Hand-washing and use of hand sanitizer.
Fruits and vegetables must be washed properly before eating; avoid bush meat and even suya, which the source is not known.
Avoid shaking of hands and hugging of people, at least for now.
Practise safe sex
Watch children and even adults to discourage them from licking their fingers before washing. Nail biting should be avoided.
The use of gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment must be used in taking care of ill patients. Proper handling of corpses, which may involve a modification of burial practices, is also a preventive step.

Are Countries Outside West Africa at Risk?
Earlier this year, a woman flying into Canada from Congo fell ill and was hospitalized. News soon spread that she had contacted the virus, even though she hadn't. There have not been any reported cases but people feel the disease is only a plane ride away, just the same way it got into Nigeria.

“It is not impossible that an Ebola outbreak could occur in North America", says Ann Marie Kimball, an epidemiologist with the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, Seattle. “We live in an age in which the travel time is shorter than the incubation for a disease. You can get infected, go on a plane for 13 or 14 hours and still have two to three days to get sick.”

Historically, Kimball adds that people would travel by ship and their symptoms would show up by the time they reached port and they could be quarantined. But its is not the same with air trips “Given travel time today, we may see an increasing number of people becoming ill when they arrive in this country, which makes disease control impossible.”

“The possibility that this deadly virus has reached North America focuses attention on the need to fortify our ability to detect and handle outbreaks of infectious diseases,” Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, said in a statement.

“It is only a matter of time before the Ebola virus reaches North America, whether this time or the next. Any infectious disease — even the world’s most deadly virus — is only an airplane flight away from our shores.”

For now, the best way to avoid being infected is to employ all measures to keep yourself protected.

11 PARENTS OF ABDUCTED CHIBOK GIRLS DEAD

About a dozen parents of the more than 200
kidnapped schoolgirls will never see their
daughters again. Since the mass abduction of the
schoolgirls by Islamic extremists three months
ago, at least 11 of
their parents have died and their hometown, Chibok,
is under siege from the militants, residents report.
Seven fathers of kidnapped girls were among 51
bodies brought to Chibok hospital after an attack on
the nearby village of Kautakari this month, said a
health worker who insisted on anonymity for fear of
reprisals by the extremists.
At least four more parents have died of heart failure,
high blood pressure and other illnesses that the
community blames on trauma due to the mass
abduction 100 days ago, said community leader Pogu
Bitrus, who provided their names.

Troubled area

"One father of two of the girls kidnapped just went
into a kind of coma and kept repeating the names of
his daughters, until life left him," said Bitrus.
Chibok is cut off because of frequent attacks on the
roads that are studded with burned out vehicles.
Commercial flights no longer go into the troubled
area and the government has halted charter flights.
Through numerous phone calls to Chibok and the
surrounding area, The Associated Press has gathered
information about the situation in the town where the
students were kidnapped from their school.
Boko Haram is closing in on Chibok, attacking villages
ever closer to the town. Villagers who survive the
assaults are swarming into the town, swelling its
population and straining resources. A food crisis
looms, along with shortages of money and fuel, said
community leader Bitrus.

Counselling

On the bright side, some of the young women who
escaped are recovering, said a health worker, who
insisted on anonymity because he feared reprisals
from Boko Haram.
Girls who had first refused to discuss their
experience, now are talking about it and taking part
in therapeutic singing and drawing — a few drew
homes, some painted flowers and one young woman
drew a picture of a soldier with a gun last week.
Girls who said they would never go back to school
now are thinking about how to continue their
education, he said.
Counselling is being offered to families of those
abducted and to some of the 57 students who
managed to escape in the first few days, said the
health worker. He is among 36 newly trained in grief
and rape counselling, under a programme funded by
USAID.
All the escapees remain deeply concerned about
their schoolmates who did not get away.

Stigma

Boko Haram filmed a video in which they threatened
to sell the students into slavery and as child brides. It
also showed a couple of the girls describing their
"conversion" from Christianity to Islam.
At least two have died of snake bites, a mediator who
was liaising with Boko Haram told AP two months
ago. At that time he said at least 20 of the girls were
ill — not surprising given that they are probably
being held in an area infested with malarial
mosquitoes, poisonous snakes and spiders, and
relying on unclean water from rivers.
Most of the schoolgirls are still believed to be held in
the Sambisa Forest — a wildlife reserve that includes
almost impenetrably thick jungle as well as more
open savannah.

Famine

The forest borders on sand dunes marking the edge
of the Sahara Desert. Sightings of the girls and their
captors have been reported in neighbouring
Cameroon and Chad.
In Chibok, the town's population is under stress.
"There are families that are putting up four and five
other families," local leader Bitrus said, adding that
food stocks are depleted. Livestock has been looted
by Boko Haram so villagers are arriving empty
handed. Worst of all, no one is planting though it is
the rainy season, he said.
"There is a famine looming," he warned.
Chibok and nearby villages are targets because they
are enclaves of staunch Christians in predominantly
Muslim north Nigeria.
The number of soldiers guarding Chibok has
increased from 15 to about 200 since the kidnapping
but they have done little to increase security in
Chibok, said Bitrus. The soldiers often refuse to
deploy to villages under attack though there is
advance warning 90 percent of the time, he said.

State of emergency

Last month the extremists took control and raised
their black flags over two villages within 30km of
Chibok. Last week they ordered residents of another
village just 16km away to clear out, Bitrus said. Every
village in the neighboring Damboa area has been
attacked and sacked, and all the villages bordering
Cameroon have been burned and are deserted,
Bitrus said, quoting residents who fled.
The attacks continue despite the fact the military
placed the area under a state of emergency in May
2013.
Residents feel so abandoned that they appealed this
month for the United Nations to send troops to
protect them. The UN has repeatedly urged Nigeria's
government to live up to its international
responsibility to protect citizens.
President Goodluck Jonathan insists his government
and military are doing everything possible to ensure
the girls' release. The defence ministry says it knows
where they are but fears any military campaign could
lead to their deaths.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in a new video
released this week repeated his demands that
Jonathan release detained extremists in exchange for
the girls — an offer Jonathan has so far refused.
After three months, few Chibok residents believe all
the schoolgirls will ever return home.

BREAKING NEWS: SECOND ATTACK TODAY BY ANOTHER FEMALE SUICIDE BOMBER AT A SHOPPING MALL IN KANO

A second attack by another female suicide bomber occured outside a shopping centre in Kano city injured at least six people after a similar blast killed three people at a petrol station, police said.

"It was the same modus operandi," Kano state police chief Aderele Shinaba told journalist, referring to the earlier attack targeting women buying kerosene.

"She was stopped at the gate of the shopping centre and blew herself up six people were injured, including two officers."


It was gathered that the explosion occurred close to Buhari Square adjacent to Shoprite Shopping Mall in Kano.

It went off at Trade Complex on Zoo Road.

The area has been cordoned off by security attached to shoprite.

BOKO HARAM KIDNAPS WIFE OF CAMEROON PRIME MINISTER

The wife of Cameroon's vice prime minister,
Amadou Ali, has been kidnapped and no fewer
than three people have been killed in the attack
by Boko Haram at Ali's home in the northern
town of Kolofata,
officials have said.
It was also reported that a local religious leader and
mayor, Seini Boukar Lamine, was kidnapped in a
separate attack on his home.
"I can confirm that the home of Vice Prime Minister
Amadou Ali in Kolofata came under a savage attack
from Boko Haram militants," Cameroon's
information minister Issa Tchiroma told Reuters
news agency on Sunday.
"They unfortunately took away his wife. They also
attacked the lamido's (religious leader's) residence
and he was also kidnapped," he said, adding that at
least three people were killed in the attack.
It can be recalled that Boko Haram fighters clashed
with the Cameroonian army in cross-border attacks
twice since Friday, killing four soldiers.

DAVIDO AND WIZKID BEEF EACH OTHER





Some time last week, we reported that Wizkid and Davido were taking shots at each other on social media and while then it was a lot of mere speculation, recent activity by them both has confirmed the feud.

Yesterday, Wizkid closed out his successful New York show with a post on Instagram with a thank you to Wale and Akon for supporting him. He then continued with what can be construed as a sub aimed at Davido. He said “Thank u so much NewYork!! Amazing show last night!! Big up @wale nd @akon for showing me love!! Proper show! Proper venue! Boys talk!! Men work!!”



Davido responded with a tweet some hours later saying: "pull half my crowd before talking shit! looser!"

FEMALE SUICIDE BOMBER HIDES EXPLOSIVES IN HIJAB, IN FAILED ATTEMPT TO BOMB KANO UNIVERSITY

The Nigeria police reported that another female
suicide bomber died in an attempt to bomb,
Northwest University in Kano on sunday at about
around 1pm. The female estimated to be about
16 years old, was
walking suspiciously towards the gate of the
university when police guarding the area spotted her,
isolated her and called for reinforcement from
female police officers adept at handling Muslim
females.
The State Police Commissioner, Aderenle Shinaba
who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen
in Kano, said 13 other persons sustained injuries.
He said the attack at Kofar Nasarawa was carried out
around 12.05 p.m. by a 16-year-old girl suicide
bomber who wanted to cross over to the university.
"The girl loaded herself with explosives and her
target was the university and in the course of
preventing her from going to the university, she
detonated the bomb and injured five policemen.
"Five out of the security personnel stationed at the
place sustained injuries, while the girl blew herself
off instantly,'' the police commissioner said.

NEWS: HACKER GARY McKINNON TURNS INTO A SEARCH EXPERT


British computer hacker Gary McKinnon fought extradition to the US for years

Gary McKinnon, the computer hacker who was the subject of a 10-year legal battle over US extradition, has reinvented himself as a search expert.

Mr McKinnon launched Small SEO, a site where he charges £40 an hour to help businesses get mentioned in search results.

On his site, he says he has more than 20 years' experience in IT services.

He had hacked US government computers but his extradition to face charges there was blocked.

The story was first reported in the Sunday Times. Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is a strategy to make sure a website or web page appears prominently in Google and other search engine results.

Home Secretary Theresa May said in October 2012 that the Briton should be permitted to stay in the UK on human rights grounds after medical reports said he was very likely to try to kill himself if extradited. Mr McKinnon, who had been fighting extradition since 2002, has Asperger's syndrome.

The following month, Mr McKinnon was told he would not face any charges in the UK and that he could start to work with computers again.'High-quality SEO'
Mr McKinnon says he hacked into the Pentagon looking for UFO evidence

The Free Gary website is still up and running and the site now links to Mr McKinnon's new services. On his website, he says: "My aim is to provide high-quality SEO to small businesses and individuals. All of my clients have so far reached the first page of Google search results for their primary keywords."

Some of the clients in his portfolio include law firm Kaim Todner, tutoring service GMAT Tutor London, and Jamm, "home of the egg roller and the child-safety door stop".

Mr McKinnon was contacted by the BBC, but declined to speak because of a prior agreement with the Daily Mail. He confirmed there were no restrictions on his ability to use computers.

Mr McKinnon was arrested in 2002 and again in 2005 before an order for his extradition was made in July 2006 under the 2003 Extradition Act.

The US authorities tried to extradite Mr McKinnon to face charges of causing $800,000 (£471,000) worth of damage to military computer systems and he would have faced up to 60 years in prison if convicted. Mr McKinnon said he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

US authorities at the time described Glasgow-born Mr McKinnon's actions as the "biggest military computer hack of all time" that was "calculated to influence and affect the US government by intimidation and coercion".

An extradition warrant for Mr McKinnon is still outstanding, preventing his travel outside the UK.
