US MAN SUES SOCCER STAR CRISTIANO RONALDO OVER CR7 TRADEMARK

Global football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is
also known to fans by the shorthand CR7,
prompting the company behind his line of
sleek underwear to target a Rhode Island
man who has trademarked the letter-number
combination, according to a new lawsuit.
In a complaint filed Monday in Rhode Island
federal court, 43-year-old fitness enthusiast
Christopher Renzi said he had received
letters from lawyers for the Danish company
JBS Textile Group demanding he give up the
trademark because it had “imminent plans”
to enter the U.S. market with Ronaldo’s CR7
underwear.
JBS has also asked the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office to cancel Renzi’s
trademark, according to court documents.
Renzi is seeking the court’s declaration that
he owns the trademark.
“We just want them to leave us alone,” said
Renzi’s attorney Michael Feldhuhn.
Attorneys for JBS could not be reached for
comment.
Renzi registered the moniker in 2009 and has
put it on jeans and T-shirts, Feldhuhn said.
He also has a website advertising a seven-
minute fitness workout, also under the CR7
name.
According to the complaint, Renzi adopted
the mark based on his initials and the day he
was born, October 7.
Court materials showed that JBS, which said
it holds the “exclusive, worldwide license” to
market Ronaldo’s CR7 underwear, believed
Renzi trademarked CR7 specifically to profit
from Ronaldo’s soaring fame.
CR7 was “so closely tied to the fame and
reputation of Cristiano Ronaldo, that a
connection with the soccer player would
immediately be presumed by the general
public when encountering” Renzi’s branded
clothes, said JBS’s filing with the Trademark
Trial and Appeal Board.
The 29-year-old Ronaldo, who plays for the
Spanish club Real Madrid, is one of the most
highly paid and recognizable athletes in the
world. He has marketing deals with
numerous major companies. His Facebook
page has more than 93 million “likes.”
One of his latest postings shows a behind-
the-scenes underwear photo shoot for a CR7
campaign launching “next week.”
Besides underwear, his brand is already
expanding into shirts and shoes.
Ronaldo is a more famous user of CR7,
Feldhuhn said, “but it’s really based on who’s
using it first. We can show we were the first
use of the CR7 name in commerce in
America.”
Feldhuhn added, “They don’t really have the
trademark rights because they haven’t used
it.”

NIGERIA: ANOTHER SUSPECTED CASE OF EBOLA VIRUS REPORTED IN LAGOS

Just seven days after Mr. Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian and US citizen, died in a private hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the personnel, who helped him out of the aircraft on his arrival in Lagos, has shown signs of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The latest victim who has not yet been named was said to have helped the late Sawyer and was among the 59 persons the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government registered to have had contact with the late Sawyer immediately on his arrival in Nigeria on Sunday, July 20.

Early symptoms of EVD include fever, headache, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, headache and joint pains, while later symptoms include bleeding from the eyes, ears nose, and the mouth as well as the rectum, eye swelling, swelling of the genitals and rashes all over the body that often contain blood. It could progress to coma, shock and death.

As at four days after Sawyer’s death in Nigeria, precisely, Monday, July 27, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said 20 of the 59 people registered to have had contact with Sawyer had been physically screened. He said 50 per cent of these 20 people had type one contact with Sawyer and 50 per cent had type two contact.

Explaining this terminology, the Director, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Abdulsalam Nasidi, said type one contact means those who had direct one-on-one contact with the late Sawyer, while type two contact refers to those that had contact with those who had direct contact with Sawyer.

However, he said the committee working on the Ebola virus disease emergency was following the World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline which recommended that only persons who showed signs of the EVD symptoms should be screened.

Efforts to get confirmation about the latest on the person showing signs of the EVD from Nasidi failed. A text message to his phone asking for confirmation was not responded to.

…No fresh case in Lagos –LASG

Lagos State Government yesterday, said no fresh case of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease has been found in the state or any part of the country.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Yewande Adeshina, none of the persons said to have come in contact with the late Liberian victim of the Ebola Virus Disease had manifested unusual body temperature or any other symptom of the dreaded virus.

She explained that all the 59 persons, who had close contact with the deceased Liberian in Nigeria were hale and hearty and had not exhibited any unusual symptoms, just as there had been no case of the dreaded disease from the country’s

borders.

Also, the Commissioner for Information, Lateef Ibirogba, has advised the citizenry to be wary of the activities of fraudsters, who were making spurious claims about their ability to provide cure for the Ebola Virus Disease, urging them to always contact health providers to report unusual feelings noticed.

He cautioned people to desist from sending panicky text messages round about the Ebola disease that could heighten tension and create anxiety.

He also advised those who wanted to make cheap money from the case to desist from their strange claims of cure for the disease or risk the wrath of the law, as only medical solutions were known to be appropriate for the disease.

He reminded residents of the state to make use of the emergency phone numbers- 08023169485, 08033086660, 08033065303, 08055281442 and 08055329229 provided to contact health authorities in case anyone with observed symptoms of the Ebola disease was noticed.

He also advised residents to observe the highest level of personal environmental hygiene, adding that they should visit hospitals or primary health centres nearest to them to report strange feelings noticed.

YOUNG SUICIDE BOMBER KILLS 3 POLY STUDENTS AWAITING NYSC POSTING

Three students of Kano State Polytechnic
were yesterday confirmed dead as another
explosion went off in the metropolis. The
blast, which occurred at the main campus of
the polytechnic, also injured seven other
victims, who have been rushed to the Murtala
Mohammed Hospital.
The blast went off a few minutes after 2pm at
the gate of the Central Administration of the
school, hitting a number of students who had
gathered to check their postings following the
release of the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) mobilization list that had just
been pasted on the notice board. The Rector,
Prof. Dalhatu Mohammed Galadachi,
confirmed the explosion on the campus
located on BUK Road, saying that the blast
was most unfortunate.
Witnesses fingered a young girl wearing a
black veil (hijab) as the agent of death ,
saying she slipped into the crowd of students
unnoticed and blew herself up. They said that
it was the impact of the explosion that killed
as well as injured those immediately around
her at the time of the explosion. The corpses
were removed to the morgue.
Speaking to Daily Sun, the Commissioner of
Police, Alhaji Adenrele Shinaba, described
the suspected bomber “as, a teenage girl
wearing black veil ( hijab)” while confirming
that three persons, which included the
suicide bomber herself, died.
The commissioner expressed concern over
the fact that recent suicide bombings in the
state were carried out by young girls wearing
veils.
He said that despite his concern, the police
have no role to play with regards to the mode
of dressing by the public, noting that as a
security organization, the police have been
sharing information with the appropriate
authorities regarding the disturbing trend in
which suicide bombers hid their bombs
under their veils. “I don’t have the power to
choose the mode of dressing of the society. I
can only advise. That decision is not mine to
make. But this is no time for sentiment. We
have to face reality. We have been sharing
our information on this with the government.
We don’t know what they would do with it,”
he said.
Meanwhile, a state of anxiety has enveloped
the state capital as residents have adopted
fresh security measures to beat the deadly
ploys of the insurgents, among which
include avoiding places of high human traffic
or vehicles and to limit their movements to
only highly essential needs and callings.
Also, in some quarters in the state capital,
residents simply avoid direct or close
contacts with young girls wearing veils even
as checks have also shown that the mode of
dressing in a long veil is no longer
fashionable to the ladies given the suspicion
it evokes from the public and security
agencies.

LIBERIA SHUTS SCHOOLS TO TACKLE EBOLA OUTBREAK

Liberia’s government has announced that it is
closing down all schools across the country
to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
Some communities would be placed under
quarantine as well, President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf said.
Non-essential government workers will be
sent home for 30 days and the army
deployed to enforce the measures.
The number of people killed by the virus in
West Africa has now reached 672, according
to new UN figures.
The BBC’s West Africa correspondent Thomas
Fessy says treatment facilities have
reportedly been overwhelmed in the Liberian
capital Monrovia.
Ebola virus disease (EVD)
Symptoms include high fever, bleeding
and central nervous system damage
Fatality rate can reach 90%
Incubation period is two to 21 days
There is no vaccine or cure
Supportive care such as rehydrating
patients who have diarrhoea and vomiting
can help recovery
Fruit bats are considered to be virus’
natural host
Some wards have already filled up, forcing
health workers to treat some patients at their
homes.
President Sirleaf said that Friday 1 August
would be a non-working day in Liberia to
allow for the disinfection of all public
facilities.
“All non-essential staff – to be determined by
the heads of ministries and agencies – are to
be placed on 30 days’ compulsory leave,” she
added.

HOLLYWOOD LIFE

What is going on in the hip-hop world
these days? First Jay Z and Beyoncé's
marriage is crambling, then rumors of Kim
Kardashian and Kanye West being unhappy and now it looks like one of our favorite couples is going through rough water. It seems that Future has a love affair with his stylist Tyrina Lee while Ciara is at home with their newborn. Sanda Rose reports: "Rumors swirled that rap mogul Future Hendrix stepped out on his fiancée Ciara long before she gave birth to their son. The investigative sleuths over on gossip board Lipstickalley.com managed to track down Future’s rumored sidepiece.
Her name is Tyrina Lee, and she goes by the username @Princesstyrinalee on
Instagram.com. A wardrobe stylist by trade, Tyrina reportedly organizes Future’s vast wardrobe and extensive collection of kicks while he’s on tour. If you recall, Future went on tour while Ciara was in labor with their baby on the west coast.
Friends say Future rarely sees Ciara or his son because he’s too busy touring. They say he spends all of his time — and apparently all of his money — on his well-kept assistant.
She flies 1st class on private jets with Future, and she wears expensive high end bags and shoes, which she posts on her social media for Ciara to see. They don’t call Tyrina “Princess” for nothing. "

BEYONCE AND JAY Z'S MARRIAGE TROUBLES BECAUSE OF RIHANNA AFFAIR RUMOURS

Uh oh! Beyonce and Jay Z may be putting on a united front while touring the country together, but a new report suggests that the Rihanna affair rumours are putting a strain on their marriage!

Beyonce and Jay Z are one of the most famous celebrity couples, but they also (try to) lead very private lives. We told you that the famous elevator fight on May 5, between Solange Knowles and Jay at The Standard Hotel, was instigated by Jay’s “too close for comfort” relationship with designer Rachel Roy. However, we also heard that he was planning on meeting up with Rihanna later that night — and that rumour is allegedly tearing them apart.
Jay Z & Beyonce: Divorcing Over Rihanna Affair Rumours?

Whether or not Jay was actually planning to meet Rihanna on May 5, the constant affair rumours are allegedly tearing Beyonce, 32, and Jay Z apart. The only time the powerful couple is together is when they’re on stage, a new report claims.

Beyonce & Jay Z Breaking Up After Their Tour
Jay Z and Beyonce may be splitting up after their 'On The Run' tour is concluded according to a new shocking report. Starring Chloe...

“Solange was like, "Enough is enough — you must be [screwing] Rihanna", a source told Page Six about that crazy night at the Boom Boom Room. “To many people who know them, they know it’s not out of the realm of possibility.”

They’re allegedly traveling with marriage counselors, The NY Post claims. Apparently, it’s not a matter of if they’ll divorce, but how and when, the article boldly suggests.

“There’s face-saving involved — they don’t want to be looked at like other celebrities out there,” the insider continued. “They are business people first, entertainers second. Husband and wife comes somewhere down the line.”
Beyonce & Rihanna’s Rivalry

Whether or not there’s any truth to an affair between Jay Z and Rihanna, she and Beyonce have long been rumoured to have a feud — the “Stay” singer even seemed to take a public shot at Bey not too long ago!

In March 2013, Rihanna Instagrammed an article about her beating out Bey as the most influential star in the UK and captioned it, “How dat feel down there on ya knees, Huh?!” an apparent reference to Beyonce’s song, 'Bow Down'.

Whispers that Jay had an affair with Rihanna are only making things worse.

CHRISTIAN MAN SENTENCED TO HAVE HIS LIPS BURNT IN IRAN FOR EATING ON THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

Tens of thousands of Iranian Muslim women attend the Eid al-Fitr prayer ceremony in Tehran, Iran. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month Ramadan. A Christian man was sentenced to have his lips burnt after refusing to fast during the religious festival

A Christian man has been sentenced by an Iranian judge to have his lips burnt with a cigarette for eating during the day in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The punishment was carried out in public in a square in the city of Kermanshah.

Five other Muslim men were publicly flogged with 70 lashes for not fasting during Ramadan.

The punishment given to offenders has been criticized by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, a political coalition which opposes the government.

The spokesperson from the coalition denounced the treatment as ‘savage’ and called on western countries to take action.

The group said: ‘The silence of the world community, especially of western countries, vis-à-vis these medieval punishments under the excuse of having nuclear talks with Iran has intensified the brutal and systematic violation of human rights in Iran.

‘This will ultimately embolden the Iranian regime to continue its nuclear projects more than before.’

But earlier this year the UN blasted Iran for the persecution of Christians in a damning report laid bare to the world in March.

The detailed report found that Iran has continued to imprison Christians for their faith and designated house churches and evangelical Christians as ‘threats to national security.’

At least 49 Christians were among 307 religious minorities being held in Iranian jails as of January 2014, noted the UN, which also criticised the regime for its hostility to Jews, Baha’is, Zoroastrians and Dervish Muslims.

In its annual report on people imprisoned for their faith around the world, the Brussels-based organization Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRWF) named Iran as one of five countries with the largest number of 'freedom of religion or belief prisoners.'

There are an estimated 250,000 Christians in Iran's 76 million strong population.

They all face torture, imprisonment or the death sentence under Sharia law for not observing Islamic religious festivals and dress codes.

Thousands of persecuted Christians have fled the country, which saw Hossein Soodmand hanged in 2008 for following the faith.

NICKI'S 'ANACONDA' COVER CREATES CONTROVERSY

Not everyone one is impressed with Nicki
Minaj’s sexy and revealing “Anaconda” single cover. Last week the rapper posted the pic on social media and it became an instant hit! But some people are worried that she’s sending the wrong message to her young fans.
Chuck Creekmur, owner of AllHipHop.com –
who’s supported Nicki when she was still
underground - has written an open letter to
her.
He wrote: “I’m trying to raise a young girl that will eventually grow into something greater than the both of us. I know that this requires great parenting, great education, great luck and an assortment of great influences.”
He went on to ask if this is the path she wants kids to follow. “Make no mistake about it, you are a leader now,” he added.

10 WAYS YOU KNOW YOUR MOBILE

If you’re among those millions of smart phone users who keep fidgeting with it even when it’s not ringing or vibrating, you’re most likely to suffer from this new disease.According to a report published in the medical journal The Lancet, a 34-year-old female patient in Spain was diagnosed with what they called ‘WhatsAppitis,’ bilateral wrist pain caused by excessive use of the messaging service WhatsApp. The doctor who diagnosed the disease reported that the woman used her mobile to text her family members and friends for a continuous stretch of 6 hours. The next day she got up with severe wrist pain. This is not the first disease or harmful effect of using mobile phones that has been reported. We all are probably so addicted to our phones that we are unknowingly destroying our health. Here are some health risks of cell phones you should be aware of:
1. Cancer: As reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), mobile phones emit radiofrequency (RF) fields a 1000 times greater than what is emitted from base stations. It’s obvious that this increased emission is likely to have some adverse effect on health of users. Although there is no clear evidence suggesting that exposure to RF fields increases the risk of cancer, but the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified RF as a possible carcinogen in humans.
2. Sleep disorders: Somehow night-time has always been favourite among regular chatting and gossiping freaks. But do you know that’s the main reason why you are sleep deprived? Several studies have concluded this. One of them is a cohort study by Sara Thomée et al which found that high mobile phone use was associated with sleep disorders. Major contributing factors to interrupted sleep pattern are getting awakened in the middle of the night due to mobile rings and vibration and increased use of mobiles post-evening until midnight.
3. Increased accident-risk: Whether you’re an iPhone, flip phone or a Blackberry user, the chances that you check your phone aggressively while travelling is undoubtedly higher. Be it while driving or while crossing the road, mobile phone can be a potential distraction. According to the WHO, we now have a lot of research showing an increased risk of traffic accidents with mobile usage (3-4 times greater).
4. Heart problems: Radiation from cell phones is not only associated with cancer but also with chronic diseases like heart problems. A study published in European Journal of Oncology, radiations emitted by cordless phones, including mobiles, contribute to abnormalities in heart function. Results reported that radiation causes the red blood cells (RBCs) to seep hemoglobin and lead to heart complications.
5. Infertility: Beware men! Your phone can even make you infertile. As of now there’s enough evidence to show that mobile phone radiation decreases sperm count in male rats. To identify whether the same holds true in humans, Wdowiak A and colleagues carried out a research which revealed that the group of men who used mobile phones had a decreased sperm cell count in their semen, leading to infertility.
6. Hearing impairment: Today, every alternate person on the street has earphones plugged in. But that’s not the only reason why hearing loss is increasing in youth and adults. Your mobile radiation is an additional factor that’s making you deaf. Long-term exposure to electromagnetic (EM) field from cell phones contributes to reducing hearing function. A study showed that people who attended phone calls for approximately 2 hours every day were at a higher risk of impaired hearing compared to those who moderate users (10-20 mins).
7. Eye problems: A lot of people use their mobiles to read e-books, do web surfing, etc apart from texting. When you do so, the glaring screen and small font size put a lot of strain on your eyes, especially if you’re reading in the dark. Mobile devices have smaller screens so you tend squint or open up your eyes wide open and blink lesser number of times. This can cause dry eyes, irritation and reddening.
8. Skin allergies: Most mobile phones have a typical metallic sheen to make them look more attractive. Such phones contain potential skin allergens like nickel, chromium and cobalt which cause cell phone dermatitis. A study by Marcella Aquino and colleagues tested 72 cell phones for the presence of nickel and cobalt. According to the results, about 29.4% of Blackberry models were tested positive for nickel, 90.5 per cent of flip phones were positive for nickel and about 52% of flip phones had cobalt.
9. Infections: How many of you use your phones in the restroom? Here’s a good reason why you shouldn’t. Cell phones not only serve as a home for your valuable data but also carry millions of infectious organisms. A study found that mobile devices are highly contaminated with organisms from fecal origin. They are a niche for several germs like E.coli (known to cause vomiting and diarrhea) andStaphyloccocus aureus (known to cause skin infections).
10. Stress: The general desperate nature of people to be available 24/7 on their mobiles is responsible to their exponentially increasing stress levels.

So, the next time you use your mobile phone incessantly, think again!

FATHER OF JUVENTUS STRIKER RELEASED BY KIDNAPPERS

Father of Juventus striker was held in Buenos Aires. Segundo Tevez unharmed after eight-hour captureCarlos Tevez is understood to be flying out to Argentina to help deal with the matter. The lawyer for Carlos Tevez says the father of the Argentina and Juventus star was kidnapped on Tuesday, but was released eight hours later and appeared to be physically unharmed. Gustavo Galasso said the forward’s father “is in good shape” as he announced the news about Segundo Tevez to reporters in Argentina.

Police did not immediately provide information about the incident. But the Argentinian TV station C5N said Tevez was set free after a payment of $400,000. Galasso did not confirm this.

In Italy, Juventus said that it gave Tevez permission to travel for “family reasons,” but reports in Italy said he was not going back to Argentina following the release. Local reports said Tevez’s father was kidnapped by unknown assailants around sunrise but offered few other details.

FATHER OF JUVENTUS STRIKER CARLOS TEVEZ KIDNAPPED

The father of Juventus Striker, Carlos Tevez has been kidnapped in Argentina and is being held for ransom, according to reports in Argentina.

The incident occurred at around 7am on Tuesday in Moron, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, when Juan Alberto Cabral’s car was intercepted, reports La Nación.

The criminals contacted the family in the city and made an initial request for ransom that was much lower than a second request a short time later, suggesting it wasn’t initially clear to them who they were holding.

Police are investigating the incident and the Juventus striker Tevez is understood to be travelling to Argentina to help deal with the matter.

LAGOS GOVERNMENT LOCATES 59 CONTACTS WITH DEAD LIBERIAN VICTIM

The Lagos State Government said on Monday
that it had identified no fewer than 59 people
who had contacts with Mr Patrick Sawyer, the
Liberian who died of Ebola Virus in the state.
Dr Jide Idris, the Commissioner for Health,
said at a news conference in Ikeja that the
contact tracing became imperative to
ascertain any possible transmission of the
virus by the victim.
Idris said the identified contacts comprised
44 hospital and 15 airport contacts, including
the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia.
He said 20 of the contacts had been screened
and that none of them had so far been found
to be infected with the virus.
The commissioner, however, said the
contacts did not include those he might have
been with on his flight to Nigeria on July 20,
as the airline had yet to release the
passenger manifest for investigation.
“The airline manifest has not been provided
by the airline as at the time of this report and
therefore, the precise number of passenger
contacts is yet to be ascertained, especially as
two flights were involved (Monrovia-Lome
and Lome-Lagos).”
The commissioner urged Nigerians not to
entertain fears about Sawyer`s case as the
state and Federal Governments were doing
everything possible to prevent any risk to the
country.
Idris said that the deceased’s body had been
decontaminated, using 10 per cent sodium
hypochlorite and cremated with the
permission of the Government of Liberia.
“A cremation urn has been prepared for
dispatch to the family. The vehicle containing
the remains have also been decontaminated
while the hospital in which he died on July 25
has been demobilised .”
Idris said that the state Ministry of Health had
designated an isolation ward at the Infectious
Disease Hospital, Yaba, for case
management, adding three other centres
were under way.
The commissioner urged residents to report
people with abnormal cases of bleeding and
fever to the appropriate authorities for
intervention, as high fever with bleeding from
all body openings were symptoms of the
disease.
Idris also urged residents to always keep
their environments clean and maintain good
personal hygiene as Ebola virus spreads
easily in dirty environments.
Also speaking, Prof. Abdul-Salami Nasidi, the
Director, National Centre for Disease Control
(NCDC) warned against the consumption of
bats and monkeys as these animals had been
established to be the original sources of
Ebola.
“This is time for those bat-eating and
monkey-eating communities to be careful
now. Ebola started from the eating of
Chimpanzees. How the virus got to the
monkey, nobody knows yet.
“But this is the time to be careful about the
eating of monkeys and bats. The Ebola threat
is high in West Africa and people should start
taking precautions.”
In a remark, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, the
President of the Nigerian Academy of
Science, also warned Nigerians against the
unsupervised burial of people who died from
suspected Ebola case.
He said 40 per cent of cases in high risk
countries were transmitted from victims`
bodies, stressing that an Ebola corpse was
deadlier the patient.
On he part, Mrs Yewande Adeshina, the
Special Adviser to the Governor on Public
Health, urged traditional healers to
collaborate with the government in checking
Ebola threats by reporting suspicious cases
for the right intervention. (NAN)

RIVER TURNS BLOOD-RED IN CHINA

River’s plague-like transformation was
noticed earlier on Thursday 24/8/2014 by residents in Zhejiang province who reported that they had noticed a weird odour coming from the area where the river was located, ABC News reports.

Locals also said the river appeared to be fine around 5am local time, but in less than an hour later, people noticed the sudden change of colour - blood-red metamorphosis.
Upon inspection, investigators with the
Wenzhou Environmental Protection Bureau
were unable to find any specific causes for
the bloody incident.
“We suspect that somebody dumped
artificial colouring in the water because he
thought the typhoon yesterday would cause
heavy rain, and nobody would notice [the
colour]”, bureau chief Jianfeng Xiao told
China News.

“It turned out there wasn’t heavy rainfall
yesterday, so the evidence is left behind.”
Xiao added that the businesses along the
river include a food colouring company, a
clothing shop and a paper manufacturer,
according to ABC News.
Despite the inexplicable strangeness of the
blood-red waterway, locals had said they have been reaping benefits.
The really weird thing is that we have
been able to catch fishes because the water is normally so clear” , said a villager on
Weibo.

NEWS: YES, EBOLA CAN BE TRANSMITTED THROUGH SEX AND SALIVA

The Ebola Virus, known as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), and formerly referred to as Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever is speedily gaining grounds across West Africa. So far, it has reportedly killed 632 people and has had it’s first death case here in Nigeria.

Ebola can be transmitted from human to human. In the Journal of Infectious Diseases, health experts dedicated to research on the virus, made these assertions after several tests:

“Although Ebola virus (EBOV) is transmitted by unprotected physical contact with infected persons, few data exist on which specific bodily fluids are infected or on the risk of fomite transmission. Therefore, we tested various clinical specimens from 26 laboratory-confirmed cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, as well as environmental specimens collected from an isolation ward, for the presence of EBOV. Virus was detected by culture and/or reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction in 16 of 54 clinical specimens (including saliva, stool, semen, breast milk, tears, nasal blood, and a skin swab) and in 2 of 33 environmental specimens. We conclude that EBOV is shed in a wide variety of bodily fluids during the acute period of illness but that the risk of transmission from fomites in an isolation ward and from convalescent patients is low when currently recommended infection control guidelines for the viral hemorrhagic fevers are followed.”
What this clearly means is that the virus can be gotten through unprotected sex and kissing infected people. In addition, if one comes in contact with bodily secretions found on needles, scalpels, soiled clothes and linens, there is high risk of infection.

Other ways one can contact the disease are through contact with a contaminated objects, butchering an infected animal and touching the dead body of someone who has died from the disease.

Fruit bats are also natural hosts of the virus, according to the World Health Organization. For people who enjoy eating bats, they have been warned to desist. Also, researchers believe humans are infected by handling dead or alive infected animals (like chimpanzees, gorillas and forest antelopes). People are advised to avoid bush meat.

Out of the 410 suspected and confirmed cases of Ebola in Guinea, 310 suspected deaths have occurred. Of the 196 suspected and confirmed cases in Liberia, 116 suspected deaths have occurred. Of 442 suspected and confirmed cases in Sierra Leone, 206 suspected deaths have occurred. Ebola kills 80 to 90 percent of the time, says Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Diagnosis is Hard in the Early Stages
Because the first symptoms of Ebola could be signs of other conditions like skin rash and red eyes, it is usually hard to diagnose. However, tests can be run in a hospital.

General Symptoms
Fever
Headache
Joint and muscle aches
Weakness
Diarrohea
Vomiting
Stomach pain
Lack of appetite

Some patients sometimes experience:
A Rash
Red Eyes
Hiccups
Cough
Sore throat
Chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Difficulty swallowing
Haemorrhaging inside and outside of the body

Symptoms sometimes appear from 2 to 21 days after a person gets infected but the most common is 8-10 days.

Ebola Has no Cure or Vaccine
Treatments and vaccines are being tested right now but so far, nothing has been made available for the cure or prevention of Ebola. There is only supportive therapy for infected persons and this consists of maintaining blood pressure and oxygen levels, and maintaining adequate fluid and electrolyte balance.

Some People Do Recover From Ebola
The percentage of recoveries is very low, most times just 1 out of 10 reported cases makes it out alive. It is yet uncertain why some people are able to fight it and others cannot.

How to Prevent Infection of Ebola

The Guardian listed out the following measures:
Avoid direct and indirect contact with bodily fluids and tissue of infected persons.
Frequent Hand-washing and use of hand sanitizer.
Fruits and vegetables must be washed properly before eating; avoid bush meat and even suya, which the source is not known.
Avoid shaking of hands and hugging of people, at least for now.
Practise safe sex
Watch children and even adults to discourage them from licking their fingers before washing. Nail biting should be avoided.
The use of gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment must be used in taking care of ill patients. Proper handling of corpses, which may involve a modification of burial practices, is also a preventive step.

Are Countries Outside West Africa at Risk?
Earlier this year, a woman flying into Canada from Congo fell ill and was hospitalized. News soon spread that she had contacted the virus, even though she hadn't. There have not been any reported cases but people feel the disease is only a plane ride away, just the same way it got into Nigeria.

“It is not impossible that an Ebola outbreak could occur in North America", says Ann Marie Kimball, an epidemiologist with the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, Seattle. “We live in an age in which the travel time is shorter than the incubation for a disease. You can get infected, go on a plane for 13 or 14 hours and still have two to three days to get sick.”

Historically, Kimball adds that people would travel by ship and their symptoms would show up by the time they reached port and they could be quarantined. But its is not the same with air trips “Given travel time today, we may see an increasing number of people becoming ill when they arrive in this country, which makes disease control impossible.”

“The possibility that this deadly virus has reached North America focuses attention on the need to fortify our ability to detect and handle outbreaks of infectious diseases,” Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, said in a statement.

“It is only a matter of time before the Ebola virus reaches North America, whether this time or the next. Any infectious disease — even the world’s most deadly virus — is only an airplane flight away from our shores.”

For now, the best way to avoid being infected is to employ all measures to keep yourself protected.

11 PARENTS OF ABDUCTED CHIBOK GIRLS DEAD

About a dozen parents of the more than 200
kidnapped schoolgirls will never see their
daughters again. Since the mass abduction of the
schoolgirls by Islamic extremists three months
ago, at least 11 of
their parents have died and their hometown, Chibok,
is under siege from the militants, residents report.
Seven fathers of kidnapped girls were among 51
bodies brought to Chibok hospital after an attack on
the nearby village of Kautakari this month, said a
health worker who insisted on anonymity for fear of
reprisals by the extremists.
At least four more parents have died of heart failure,
high blood pressure and other illnesses that the
community blames on trauma due to the mass
abduction 100 days ago, said community leader Pogu
Bitrus, who provided their names.

Troubled area

"One father of two of the girls kidnapped just went
into a kind of coma and kept repeating the names of
his daughters, until life left him," said Bitrus.
Chibok is cut off because of frequent attacks on the
roads that are studded with burned out vehicles.
Commercial flights no longer go into the troubled
area and the government has halted charter flights.
Through numerous phone calls to Chibok and the
surrounding area, The Associated Press has gathered
information about the situation in the town where the
students were kidnapped from their school.
Boko Haram is closing in on Chibok, attacking villages
ever closer to the town. Villagers who survive the
assaults are swarming into the town, swelling its
population and straining resources. A food crisis
looms, along with shortages of money and fuel, said
community leader Bitrus.

Counselling

On the bright side, some of the young women who
escaped are recovering, said a health worker, who
insisted on anonymity because he feared reprisals
from Boko Haram.
Girls who had first refused to discuss their
experience, now are talking about it and taking part
in therapeutic singing and drawing — a few drew
homes, some painted flowers and one young woman
drew a picture of a soldier with a gun last week.
Girls who said they would never go back to school
now are thinking about how to continue their
education, he said.
Counselling is being offered to families of those
abducted and to some of the 57 students who
managed to escape in the first few days, said the
health worker. He is among 36 newly trained in grief
and rape counselling, under a programme funded by
USAID.
All the escapees remain deeply concerned about
their schoolmates who did not get away.

Stigma

Boko Haram filmed a video in which they threatened
to sell the students into slavery and as child brides. It
also showed a couple of the girls describing their
"conversion" from Christianity to Islam.
At least two have died of snake bites, a mediator who
was liaising with Boko Haram told AP two months
ago. At that time he said at least 20 of the girls were
ill — not surprising given that they are probably
being held in an area infested with malarial
mosquitoes, poisonous snakes and spiders, and
relying on unclean water from rivers.
Most of the schoolgirls are still believed to be held in
the Sambisa Forest — a wildlife reserve that includes
almost impenetrably thick jungle as well as more
open savannah.

Famine

The forest borders on sand dunes marking the edge
of the Sahara Desert. Sightings of the girls and their
captors have been reported in neighbouring
Cameroon and Chad.
In Chibok, the town's population is under stress.
"There are families that are putting up four and five
other families," local leader Bitrus said, adding that
food stocks are depleted. Livestock has been looted
by Boko Haram so villagers are arriving empty
handed. Worst of all, no one is planting though it is
the rainy season, he said.
"There is a famine looming," he warned.
Chibok and nearby villages are targets because they
are enclaves of staunch Christians in predominantly
Muslim north Nigeria.
The number of soldiers guarding Chibok has
increased from 15 to about 200 since the kidnapping
but they have done little to increase security in
Chibok, said Bitrus. The soldiers often refuse to
deploy to villages under attack though there is
advance warning 90 percent of the time, he said.

State of emergency

Last month the extremists took control and raised
their black flags over two villages within 30km of
Chibok. Last week they ordered residents of another
village just 16km away to clear out, Bitrus said. Every
village in the neighboring Damboa area has been
attacked and sacked, and all the villages bordering
Cameroon have been burned and are deserted,
Bitrus said, quoting residents who fled.
The attacks continue despite the fact the military
placed the area under a state of emergency in May
2013.
Residents feel so abandoned that they appealed this
month for the United Nations to send troops to
protect them. The UN has repeatedly urged Nigeria's
government to live up to its international
responsibility to protect citizens.
President Goodluck Jonathan insists his government
and military are doing everything possible to ensure
the girls' release. The defence ministry says it knows
where they are but fears any military campaign could
lead to their deaths.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in a new video
released this week repeated his demands that
Jonathan release detained extremists in exchange for
the girls — an offer Jonathan has so far refused.
After three months, few Chibok residents believe all
the schoolgirls will ever return home.

BREAKING NEWS: SECOND ATTACK TODAY BY ANOTHER FEMALE SUICIDE BOMBER AT A SHOPPING MALL IN KANO

28 JULY 2014

A second attack by another female suicide bomber occured outside a shopping centre in Kano city injured at least six people after a similar blast killed three people at a petrol station, police said.

"It was the same modus operandi," Kano state police chief Aderele Shinaba told journalist, referring to the earlier attack targeting women buying kerosene.

"She was stopped at the gate of the shopping centre and blew herself up six people were injured, including two officers."

It was gathered that the explosion occurred close to Buhari Square adjacent to Shoprite Shopping Mall in Kano.

It went off at Trade Complex on Zoo Road.

The area has been cordoned off by security attached to shoprite.

BOKO HARAM KIDNAPS WIFE OF CAMEROON PRIME MINISTER

The wife of Cameroon's vice prime minister,
Amadou Ali, has been kidnapped and no fewer
than three people have been killed in the attack
by Boko Haram at Ali's home in the northern
town of Kolofata,
officials have said.
It was also reported that a local religious leader and
mayor, Seini Boukar Lamine, was kidnapped in a
separate attack on his home.
"I can confirm that the home of Vice Prime Minister
Amadou Ali in Kolofata came under a savage attack
from Boko Haram militants," Cameroon's
information minister Issa Tchiroma told Reuters
news agency on Sunday.
"They unfortunately took away his wife. They also
attacked the lamido's (religious leader's) residence
and he was also kidnapped," he said, adding that at
least three people were killed in the attack.
It can be recalled that Boko Haram fighters clashed
with the Cameroonian army in cross-border attacks
twice since Friday, killing four soldiers.

DAVIDO AND WIZKID BEEF EACH OTHER

Some time last week, we reported that Wizkid and Davido were taking shots at each other on social media and while then it was a lot of mere speculation, recent activity by them both has confirmed the feud.

Yesterday, Wizkid closed out his successful New York show with a post on Instagram with a thank you to Wale and Akon for supporting him. He then continued with what can be construed as a sub aimed at Davido. He said “Thank u so much NewYork!! Amazing show last night!! Big up @wale nd @akon for showing me love!! Proper show! Proper venue! Boys talk!! Men work!!”

Davido responded with a tweet some hours later saying: "pull half my crowd before talking shit! looser!"

Could this be jealousy?

FEMALE SUICIDE BOMBER HIDES EXPLOSIVES IN HIJAB, IN FAILED ATTEMPT TO BOMB KANO UNIVERSITY

The Nigeria police reported that another female
suicide bomber died in an attempt to bomb,
Northwest University in Kano on sunday at about
around 1pm. The female estimated to be about
16 years old, was
walking suspiciously towards the gate of the
university when police guarding the area spotted her,
isolated her and called for reinforcement from
female police officers adept at handling Muslim
females.
The State Police Commissioner, Aderenle Shinaba
who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen
in Kano, said 13 other persons sustained injuries.
He said the attack at Kofar Nasarawa was carried out
around 12.05 p.m. by a 16-year-old girl suicide
bomber who wanted to cross over to the university.
"The girl loaded herself with explosives and her
target was the university and in the course of
preventing her from going to the university, she
detonated the bomb and injured five policemen.
"Five out of the security personnel stationed at the
place sustained injuries, while the girl blew herself
off instantly,'' the police commissioner said.

NEWS: HACKER GARY McKINNON TURNS INTO A SEARCH EXPERT

British computer hacker Gary McKinnon fought extradition to the US for years

Gary McKinnon, the computer hacker who was the subject of a 10-year legal battle over US extradition, has reinvented himself as a search expert.

Mr McKinnon launched Small SEO, a site where he charges £40 an hour to help businesses get mentioned in search results.

On his site, he says he has more than 20 years' experience in IT services.

He had hacked US government computers but his extradition to face charges there was blocked.

The story was first reported in the Sunday Times. Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is a strategy to make sure a website or web page appears prominently in Google and other search engine results.

Home Secretary Theresa May said in October 2012 that the Briton should be permitted to stay in the UK on human rights grounds after medical reports said he was very likely to try to kill himself if extradited. Mr McKinnon, who had been fighting extradition since 2002, has Asperger's syndrome.

The following month, Mr McKinnon was told he would not face any charges in the UK and that he could start to work with computers again.'High-quality SEO'
Mr McKinnon says he hacked into the Pentagon looking for UFO evidence

The Free Gary website is still up and running and the site now links to Mr McKinnon's new services. On his website, he says: "My aim is to provide high-quality SEO to small businesses and individuals. All of my clients have so far reached the first page of Google search results for their primary keywords."

Some of the clients in his portfolio include law firm Kaim Todner, tutoring service GMAT Tutor London, and Jamm, "home of the egg roller and the child-safety door stop".

Mr McKinnon was contacted by the BBC, but declined to speak because of a prior agreement with the Daily Mail. He confirmed there were no restrictions on his ability to use computers.

Mr McKinnon was arrested in 2002 and again in 2005 before an order for his extradition was made in July 2006 under the 2003 Extradition Act.

The US authorities tried to extradite Mr McKinnon to face charges of causing $800,000 (£471,000) worth of damage to military computer systems and he would have faced up to 60 years in prison if convicted. Mr McKinnon said he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

US authorities at the time described Glasgow-born Mr McKinnon's actions as the "biggest military computer hack of all time" that was "calculated to influence and affect the US government by intimidation and coercion".

An extradition warrant for Mr McKinnon is still outstanding, preventing his travel outside the UK.

FIRST SMARTPHONE HISTORY

IBM debuted a prototype device, code named "Angler," on November 23, 1992 at the COMDEX computer and technology trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The Angler prototype combined a cell phone and PDA into one device, allowing a user to make and receive telephone calls, facsimiles, emails and cellular pages, among other functions. COMDEX show attendees and the press showed notable interest in the device. The day after Angler's debut, USA Today featured a photo on the front page of the Money section showing Frank Canova, Angler's architect, holding the prototype.

BellSouth executives gave the finished product its final name, "Simon Personal Communicator", before its public debut at the Wireless World Conference in November 1993. BellSouth Cellular had planned to begin selling Simon in May 1994, but due to problems with the device's software, the Simon did not become available to consumers until August 16, 1994. BellSouth Cellular initially offered the Simon throughout its 15 state service area for US$899 with a two-year service contract or US$1099 without a contract. Later in the product's life, BellSouth Cellular reduced the price to US$599 with a two-year contract.

BellSouth Cellular sold approximately 50,000 units during the product's six months on the market.

Although the term "smartphone" was not coined until 1997, because of Simon's features and capabilities, it can be referred to as the first smartphone.

The IBM Simon Personal Communicator included a custom-fit, protective, leather cover
Features

In addition to its ability to make and receive cellular phone calls, Simon was also able to send and receive faxes, e-mails and cellular pages. Simon featured many applications including an address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock, electronic note pad, handwritten annotations and standard and predictive stylus input screen keyboards.

Accessories
Each Simon was shipped with a charging base station, two nickel-cadmium batteries and a protective leather cover.

Operating system and applications
The Simon used the file system from Datalight ROM-DOS along with file compression from Stacker. IBM created a unique touch-screen user interface for Simon; no DOS prompt existed. This user interface software layer for Simon was known as the Navigator.

The Simon could be upgraded to run third party applications either by inserting a PCMCIA card or by downloading an application to the phone's internal memory.

Atlanta, Georgia-based PDA Dimensions developed "DispatchIt", the only aftermarket, third-party application developed for Simon. It was an early predecessor to "Remote Desktop" software. The DispatchIt application costs were US$2,999 for the host PC software and US$299 for each Simon software client.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EBOLA VIRUS

Ebola virus disease (formerly known as Ebola
haemorrhagic fever) is a severe, often fatal illness,
with a case fatality rate of up to 90%. It is one of the
world’s most virulent diseases. The infection is
transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body
fluids and tissues of infected animals or people.
Severely ill patients require intensive supportive
care.

During an outbreak, those at higher risk of
infection are health workers, family members and
others in close contact with sick people and
deceased patients.

Ebola virus disease outbreaks can devastate
families and communities, but the infection can be
controlled through the use of recommended
protective measures in clinics and hospitals, at
community gatherings, or at home.

Infection and transmission

In Africa, fruit bats are believed to be the natural
hosts of Ebola virus. The virus is transmitted from
wildlife to people through contact with infected
fruit bats, or through intermediate hosts, such as
monkeys, apes, or pigs that have themselves
become infected through contact with bat saliva or
faeces.
People may then become infected through contact
with infected animals, either in the process of
slaughtering or through consumption of blood,
milk, or raw or undercooked meat.
The virus is then passed from person to person
through direct contact with the blood, secretions or
other bodily fluids of infected persons, or from
contact with contaminated needles or other
equipment in the environment.

Signs and symptoms

EVD, which has a case fatality rate of up to 90%, is a
severe acute viral illness often characterized by the
sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle
pain, headache, nausea and sore throat. This is
followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, impaired kidney
and liver function, and in some cases, both internal
and external bleeding. Laboratory findings
frequently include low white blood cell and platelet
counts and elevated liver enzymes.
The incubation period, the time interval from
infection with the virus to onset of symptoms, is 2
to 21 days. People remain infectious as long as
their blood and secretions contain the virus, a
period that has been reported to be as long as 61
days after onset of illness.

Diagnosis and treatment

When considering the diagnosis of EVD, other,
more common diseases should not be overlooked;
for example, malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis,
cholera, leptospirosis, plague, rickettsiosis,
relapsing fever, meningitis, hepatitis and other viral
haemorrhagic fevers.
Definitive diagnosis of EVD is made through
laboratory testing. Because samples from patients
are a source of infection risk for others, testing is
conducted under maximum biological containment
conditions.
No vaccine is available, nor is there any specific
treatment. Severely ill patients require intensive
supportive care. Patients are frequently dehydrated
and require oral rehydration with solutions
containing electrolytes, or intravenous fluids.

Preventative measures

Raising awareness of the risk factors for infection
and the protective measures that should be taken is
the only way to reduce human infection and
subsequent deaths. Close unprotected physical
contact with Ebola patients should be avoided.
Appropriate use of gloves and personal protective
equipment (including hand hygiene before putting
on, and especially after taking off personal
protective equipment) should be practised when
taking care of ill patients at home. Regular hand
washing is required after visiting patients in
hospital, as well as after taking care of patients at
home.
Almost all transmission of the virus to health-care
workers has been reported when basic infection
control measures have not been observed. Health-
care workers caring for any patient should practice
standard precautions. When caring for patients
with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus infection,
health-care workers should apply, in addition to
standard precautions, other infection control
measures to avoid any exposure to patients’ blood
and body fluids and with possibly contaminated
environments.
Preparation for burial of the bodies of persons who
have died from Ebola virus disease also carries
high risks of transmission of the virus. Those who
have died from the disease should be promptly and
safely buried.

BODY OF EBOLA VICTIM CREMATED IN LAGOS

The body of the first victim of Ebola Virus Disease
in Nigeria, who died in Lagos on Friday, has been
cremated. Details of the cremation were not
available at press time but Sunday Vanguard
gathered
that the eveny was witnessed by officials of the Lagos
State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for
Disease Control, NCDC, led by its Project Director,
Professor Abdulsalam Nasidi, among others.
The decision to cremate the body of the victim, it was
further gathered, may not be unconnected with the
deadly nature of the Ebola Virus which is known to be
easily transmissible from human to human during
handling of corpses of victims.
The World Health Organisation recommends that in
communities where there is an outbreak of Ebola,
appropriate containment measures including burial
of the dead should be properly handled.
While stating that people who die from Ebola should
be promptly and safely buried, WHO? Notes that
cremation, which is the application of high
temperature to reduce bodies to basic chemical
components (ashes)? Is ideal for safe disposal of
bodies of persons who die during outbreaks of highly
infectious diseases such as Ebola Virus in order to
minimise further transmission.
In 2013 the Lagos State Government introduced its
Voluntary Cremation Law under which a person may
signify interest to be cremated at death or a
deceased's family members who must attain the age
of 18 years, can decide to have the corpse cremated.
Under the law the state government can also cremate
unclaimed corpses in its mortuaries after a period of
time and the ashes disposed after a 14-day notice
with approval of the Commissioner for Health.

DEADLY EBOLA VIRUS SPREAD TO NIGERIA BY PLANE AND SIERRA-LEONE LOOK FOR KIDNAPPED PATIENT

The Ebola virus that has already killed 660 people across West
Africa has spread to Nigeria after a Liberian man boarded a
plane to the country, the most populous in the continent.
He managed to board the flight despite of having a high fever.
Once on the plane he vomited, before dying in Nigeria.
Upon arrival in the country’s capital Lagos - a megacity home
to 21 million people - the 40-year-old had been moved to an
isolation ward.
Believed to be a government official with the finance ministry,
he had recently lost his sister to Ebola in Liberia, health
officials there said. Authorities are now investigating anyone
who may have come into contact with him.
Nigerian health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said it was the first
case of Ebola to be confirmed in Nigeria since the start of the
current outbreak in the region. The disease has already hit
Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, infecting 1,093.
In Sierra Leone, officials are hunting the first known resident of
the capital Freetown to test positive for the disease after the
family of the woman forcibly removed her from a hospital in the
city.
Saudatu Koroma, 32, a resident of the densely populated
Wellington neighbourhood, had been admitted to an isolation
ward while blood samples were analysed, health ministry
spokesman Sidi Yahya Tunis. The results came back on
Thursday.
“The family of the patient stormed the hospital and forcefully
removed her and took her away,” Tunis said. “We are searching
for her.”
Fighting one of the world's deadliest diseases is straining the
region's weak health systems, while a lack of information and
suspicion of medical staff has led many to shun treatment.
According to health ministry data and officials, dozens of
people confirmed by laboratory tests to have Ebola are now
unaccounted for in Sierra Leone, where the majority of cases
have been recorded in the country's east.
There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, which causes diarrhea,
vomiting and internal and external bleeding. It can kill up to 90
percent of those infected, although the mortality rate of the
current outbreak is around 60 percent.
The West African outbreak is the first time that Ebola, which
was first discovered in what is now Democratic Republic of
Congo in 1976, has appeared in heavily populated urban areas
and international travel hubs.

INEC SACKS 30 STAFF OVER ELECTION-RELATED OFFENCES

The Independent National Electoral Commission
[INEC] has fired no fewer than 30 of its personnel
accused for aiding electoral malpractices across
the country during the 2011 general election, the
electoral body has said.
Sixteen of the dismissed staff were punished for their
alleged involvement in election-related offences in
Anambra state, the South-East state which elections
are usually tainted by rigging and thuggery.
Other states, whose elections led to the dismissal of
INEC officials, are Imo (3), Edo (1), Zamfara (1), FCT
(1), Delta (1), Oyo (2), Rivers (1), Lagos (1), and Osun
(2).
A staff based at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja was
also shown the door for allegedly colluding with
politicians to perpetrate electoral fraud.
Besides, the Commission is prosecuting nine out of
its 12 staff apprehended for committing various
forms of electoral offences during the governorship
elections in six states.
Two out of the 12 electoral offenders have been
discharged and acquitted while one was convicted.
According to a letter to a civil society group, Say No
Campaign, in response to a Freedom of Information
request, INEC said those dismissed or whose
appointments were terminated committed offences
such as refusal to carry out lawful duties and
misleading the Commission, misconduct,
disappearance with money meant for payment of
allowances of ad-hoc staff, withholding ballot papers,
manipulation of election results and possession of
DDC machines.
Others offences listed are allegation of illegal entries
in the register of voters and attempt to make use of
left-over money.
The letter, dated July 14 and signed by the Secretary
to the Commission, Augusta Ogakwu, was in
response to a request by the civil group on June 9 in
accordance with the Freedom of Information Act, for
the list of the electoral offenders.
Say No Campaign is a coalition of civil society
organisations committed to fighting corruption,
impunity, poverty, violence and other governance
challenges in the country.
According to the document, made exclusively
available to PREMIUM TIMES, the 16 officials axed in
connection with the Anambra election committed the
same offence: "Allegation of wrong entries in the
register of voters."
All 16 staff, who were either electoral officers or
those drawn from ICT and Audit Units of the election
body for election duty, had their appointments
terminated by the Commission.
The remaining 14 staff were either compulsorily
retired or dismissed in 2011.
The most senior officer among them who hails from
in Imo State was on Grade Level 16. He was retired
for "refusal to carry out lawful directives and
misleading the Commission."
Another officer dismissed while on Grade Level 15 is
from Edo State. He was found guilty of wrongful
recruitment and deployment of a collation officer
whose name was given as Dr. Paul.
Those being prosecuted in court for electoral
offences, according to a document attached to the
letter and signed by S.O. Ibrahim, the assistant
director in charge of the commission's legal services,
(prosecution) are Chukwujekwu Okeke (Anambra)
and Osunlola Akinyinka (Oyo).
Mr. Akinyinka is being prosecuted at the High Court
in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Chinedu Nwankwo, Henry Anozie and Obiora Enebeli
committed their own offences in Edo State and their
cases are also in court.
In Ekiti, although Ojo Oluwafemi and Olusola Oladipo
have been dismissed from service, their cases are
pending in court. Two other officers, Oni Babajide
James and Ajayi Gbenga whose, cases are pending in
court, are however on interdiction.
Isa Amana, an ad-hoc staff and Omolade Raphael,
who allegedly committed offences in Ondo State,
have since been discharged and acquitted at a
Magistrate Court while Sani Dada who has since been
convicted, committed the offence in Niger State.
Kayode Idowu, media aide to the INEC Chairman,
Attahiru Jega could not be reached to comment for
this story. He did not answer or return calls made to
his mobile telephone call.
But Mr. Jega had in 2013 admitted the presence of
corrupt officials and staff in INEC, who were not only
aiding and abetting rigging, but also committing
other electoral malpractices
"INEC officials are not immune to prosecution. Since
we came here, as a Commission we have prosecuted
INEC officials, who have been clearly found guilty of
breaching established laws, rules and regulations
and we have also quietly shown people the way out.
Probably, it was not well advertised," he said during
the public presentation of Strategic Programme of
Action of INEC covering 2012 to 2016.
"There were many people that were indicted who
were not faithful due to criminal activities which
clearly were incompatible with the objectives and
responsibility that they were supposed to bring to
this job. We have retired people.
"We have dismissed people and asked people to
withdraw their services. We have done a lot quietly
and it is not something that really should have been
advertised.
He said INEC made it clear it would draw the line and
that though the leadership was not looking for fault,
it would not do anything wrong or ask anybody to do
wrong, but if anyone was found doing wrong, he
would have himself to blame.
The INEC Chairman added, "No doubt, I must share
with you that my own assessment of what has
happened is that in INEC previously, certainly there
were a few bad eggs, who had done things and things
they had done had more or less damaged the image
of the entire members of the Commission.
"It is really a terrible thing that has happened. And it
is very, very clear that majority of staff of INEC are
honest people doing honest job under very difficult
circumstances. All they required was motivation and
encouragement and inspiration from the conduct of
those who are placed in positions of responsibility."

UPDATE: 35 BODIES PULLED FROM GAZA RUBBLE

The bodies of at least another 35 Palestinians
were recovered from rubble across Gaza on
Saturday, raising to over 900 the overall death
toll of Israel's onslaught on the territory since
July 8, medics said.

Emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said
the bodies were retrieved in the three hours since a
humanitarian truce came into effect. Thirteen bodies
were recovered in Shejaiya in eastern Gaza City, 13
more in Deir al-Balah and Nusseirat in central Gaza,
and nine in north Gaza.

WORLD CUP 2014: NETHERLAND DEFEATS BRAZIL

Host nation Brazil’s miserable run of form at the World Cup continued with a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place playoff in Brasília on Saturday afternoon.Any hopes of Brazil saving face at its own party evaporated within two minutes, when Thiago Silva pulled down Arjen Robben on the edge of the area. Silva, who missed the 7-1 semifinal rout against Germany through suspension and was supposed to bring stability to a shaky Brazilian backline, was lucky only to receive a yellow card for the foul. Robin van Persie made no mistake with the penalty, firing his spot kick past Júlio César into the top corner.

It got worse quickly. Playing a high line that invited counterattacks from the Dutch, the Brazilians went 2-0 down in the 16th minute when David Luiz headed Jonathan De Guzman’s cross straight to Netherlands defender Daley Blind, who had time and space to control and volley past Júlio César.
The Dutch comfortably defended a two-goal cushion against a ramshackle Brazilian offense for which long balls and crosses, not skill, were the order of the day.

Brazil attacked without purpose or intelligence; it was no surprise when Georginio Wijnaldum fired home a shot between Júlio César and the near post after some good work by Robben and Daryl Janmaat in stoppage time.Dutch coach Louis van Gaal will now leave the team to take over managerial duties at England’s Manchester United. The future of his Brazil counterpart, Luiz Felipe Scolari, is far less certain.

KEFEE BURIED AMID TEARS

The remains of the late popular gospel singer,
Kefee, were finally laid to rest in her home town,
Okpara Inland of Ethiope East Local Government,
Delta State on Friday, as so many people could
not control
their emotions.

Most of the mourners, dressed in black tee-shirts
with Kefee's picture printed on them, carried
placards and posters of the late singer as they
trooped to the burial site.

Before the interment, a homecoming service was
held in her honour at Akpevweoghene Educational
Centre, Okpara Inland of Ethiope East Local
Government, Delta State where family, colleagues,
friends and fans gathered to pay their last respect to
the late singer.

Her remains, in a white casket, were first taken to
one of the classrooms in the school where some
pastors prayed for the repose of her soul. Thereafter,
the casket was brought to an open field for the lying
in state ceremony before she was buried.

It was gathered that her widower, Teddy Don-
Momoh, dressed in white attire, couldn't say much all
through the ceremony as tears kept rolling down his
eyes. Our correspondent learnt that her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Andrew Obareki, stayed away from the
burial as their custom demanded that parents should
not see the corpse of their children.

Some Nigerian entertainers who travelled to Delta
State for the burial ceremony include Tony Okoroji,
Daddy Showkey, Azzezat, Aity, I go dye, Princess and
Nikky Laoye.

Born Irikefe Obareki, Kefee passed on in the United
States of America last June after being in a coma in
an undisclosed hospital for few weeks.
Kefee would be remembered for her popular song,
Branama and Kokoroko, which earned her so many
awards.
Previously married to a music director, Alec Godwin,
Kefee got married again to a Lagos-based on-air-
personality with Star FM, Teddy Don-Momoh, in 2012..

MAN WHO SPENT 16 YEARS IN PRISON FOR MURDER HE DID'NT COMMIT AWARDED $3M

After spending 16 horrendous years behind bars
for a crime he did not commit, Jabbar Collins has
been awarded a compensation worth $3 million
by the state of New York for their obstruction of
justice, after it was
discovered that he was conspired into prosecution by
a crooked lawyer.

According to NYDailyNews report: Jabbar Collins’
settlement was approved Thursday by Judge Faviola
Soto in the state Court of Claims in lower Manhattan.
Outside court, Collins said the settlement was
bittersweet because his mother passed away last
July. “I would love for her to be here because she
knew this day was coming,” Collins said. “I wanted
what every son wants to see their mom have, to live
the rest of her days in peace. She was there for me
for 16 years.” Three million dollars is a lot of money,
but it is a small fraction of what Jabbar Collins is
entitled to for 15 horrendous years in maximum
security state prison,” said lawyer Joel Rudin. Collins
was convicted in 1995 of murdering Rabbi Abraham
Pollack during a robbery in Williamsburg.

With Collins diligently working on his appeals from
prison, the conviction unraveled when it was
discovered that then-prosecutor Michael Vecchione
had allegedly coerced witnesses into falsely testifying
and withheld important evidence from the defense at
Collins’ trial.

Collins now has a grandchild of his own and plans to
attend Bible college to spread the ministry that
helped him get through his prison sentence..

A SCHOOL WHERE HALF OF THE PUPILS IN A CLASS ARE TWINS - AMAZING

This sounds very interesting to say the least as staff at a primary school are getting used to seeing double because morning roll-call reveals that almost half the pupils in one class are twins. Of the 25 youngsters in Year Six at St Anne’s Church of England school in Waterfoot, near Bacup, Lancs, in England, there are five sets of twins with two being identical. And in every case the elder twin is smaller than their sibling – "and all five pairs have an older brother or stepbrother", their class teacher, Kim Kirk says. He says even though they sometimes trick him, he has managed to identify some with the length of their hair, but some twins are too alike he still can’t differentiate.

EVEN IF YOU STAB IT WITH A SHARP KNIFE, YOU CAN'T DAMAGE IPHONE 6

This dude Marques Brownlee uploaded a video on youtube, he was for real, putting what alleges is the display for a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 through abuse and torture. He stabbed and did all he could to spoil the face of the iPhone 6… but he couldn’t.

In the video uploaded by Brownlee, he puts the iPhone 6 display through a quick scratch test using a pocket knife and a set of keys. When he’s unable to leave so much as a tiny scratch on the panel’s surface, he moves on to a bend test bending it more than 90 degrees, failing to do any damage to it on any count.

PROMINENT HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVIST BAMIDELE ATURU DIES AT 49

One of Nigeria’s foremost human rights lawyers, Bamidele Aturu, is dead. Mr Aturu, known for his commitment to championing human rights and constitutionalism, died in a Lagos hospital on Wednesday evening after a brief illness. Associates of the deceased confirmed his death.

The late lawyer was one of the founding members of a political group committed to pursuing deep-rooted democratic principles and holding those in power accountable to the governed – Democratic Alternative.

He came to prominence as a fighter against power abuses when, as a member of the National Youth Service Corps, he refused to shake the hand of a military administrator of Niger State, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, in 1988 during his NYSC passing out parade declaring that the military had caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

Mr Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his legal practice to representing marginalised or oppressed individuals and groups.

He was nominated as a member of the ongoing national confab, but he renounced his membership, arguing that the conference was designed to achieve nothing.
